Shirley Jean Slocumb, age 92, formerly of Highbanks Apartments, St. Cloud, MN and recently of St. Benedict's Senior Community, St. Cloud, MN, died Saturday, May 28, 2016 at St. Benedict’s Senior Community.
Funeral services will be Tuesday June 7, 2016 at 11:00 AM at Benson Funeral Home Chapel, St. Cloud, MN. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service on Tuesday at the funeral home. Interment will be in the columbarium at St. John’s Episcopal Church, St. Cloud, MN.
Shirley was born January 18, 1924 in St. Cloud to Frederick J. and Vera E. (Basel) Scheerer. She graduated from St. Cloud Technical High School in 1941 where she was a member of the National Honor Society. Shirley received her undergraduate degree from St. Cloud State University in 1944 and her Master’s degree in 1963. She taught high school English in Fosston, Monticello, Boy River, Sauk Rapids and Duluth, MN. Shirley retired in 1984 and moved to St. Cloud, MN. Shirley was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church.
The story of Shirley’s life is contained between the lines of the New Testament, and her books of poetry: Discussions in a Steeple and Exits and Entrances.
Survivors include a sister-in-law, Gwendolyn (Leon B) Scheerer of Muskegon, MI and Sun City West, AZ; brother-in-law, Marvin Laubach and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, brother, Dr. Leon Scheerer and sister, Darline Laubach. |
