     Marvin Virgil Kumpula, age 88, Waite Park, MN died Tuesday, September 13, 2016 at the Veterans Administration Medical Center, St. Cloud, MN.
     Funeral services will be Saturday, September 24, 2016 at 10:30 AM at Grace United Methodist Church, St. Cloud, MN. Visitation will be Friday, September 23, 2016 from 5:00 to 8:00 PM at Benson Funeral Home, St. Cloud, MN and one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday. Burial will be in the Cokato Apostolic Lutheran Cemetery, Cokato, MN.
     Marvin was born May 27, 1928 in Dassel, MN to Frank and Helmi (Brandstrom) Kumpula. He married JoAnn K. Bardson on December 2, 1950 at Grace Evangelical United Brethren Church in St. Cloud, MN. Marvin served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict as a squad leader and platoon Sergeant, receiving a Purple Heart. After his discharge from the Army Marvin and JoAnn lived in Dassel, MN until 1956 when they moved to St. Cloud, MN. They lived on Long Lake by Clearwater, MN, where he enjoyed fishing, water skiing, snowmobiling and spending time with family, especially the grandchildren. They moved to Waite Park in December of 2003 for health reasons. Marvin was a member of Grace United Methodist Church.
     Survivors include his wife, JoAnn Kumpula of Waite Park, MN; daughters, Linda L. (Marlin Birkholz) Paar of Lakeville, MN; Marsha M (Daniel) Zeller of Anoka, MN; sister, Verna Anderson of Dassel, MN; five grandchildren, Kari (Julien) Kubesh, Kim (Jeff) Perron, Kristi (Steve) Pawlak, David (Tirzah) Zeller, Jessica (Andy) LaHoud; eight great grandchildren, Brandon, Jacob, Kaitlyn, Cole, Arya, Peyton, Isaiah, Keziah and a number of nieces and nephews.
     He was preceded in death by his parents, and brother-in-law Harold Anderson.
     We wish to thank everyone in Bldg. 51 west, at the Veterans Administration Medical Center, for the wonderful care and support they provided Marvin for the past 1 1/2 years.
     Memorials are preferred to Grace United Methodist Church.
